These are the assignments to be completed by 7th grade students during the third quarter of the 2012-2013 school year. When updating their ePortfolio sites, students need to make sure that their writing is interesting to read and appropriate for their grade level. All grammar and spelling should be correct and should be at least four sentences in length, unless told otherwise. Many of these assignments could be completed at home, if needed. Student will need Internet access and may need access to the programs listed below in order to complete the assignments.
  • Microsoft Word
  • Microsoft Excel
  • Microsoft PowerPoint
  • Microsoft Paint
  • Paint.NET - a free graphics program for Windows
In order to transfer completed work between home and school, the student would need access to the Internet and would need to log in to Edmodo and upload files to their library. Files uploaded to the student's library could then be downloaded to their computer at school and turned in for grading.

Celebrating Dr. Seuss

March 2nd is Theodor Seuss Geisel's (Dr. Seuss) birthday and in celebration, 7th grade will create an animated GIF and write a poem in the style of Dr. Seuss.
  1. For inspiration, student will watch The Cat in the Hat in many different hats
  2. Student will download Cat with NO Hat image and save in their folder. This should not be renamed.
  3. Student will use Paint.NET to create 3-10 hats for the cat:
    1. Student will open the image they downloaded in Paint.NET
    2. Student will draw a hat. Need a color you can't seem to create using the Color Picker? Go to the Color Chart and find the color that you want. Then copy the HEX Code for the color but leave off the # sign - for example, you would copy 5D8AA8 for Air Force Blue. Click More>> on the color palette in Paint.NET and paste the code you copied into the Hex box. You can then use <<Less to hide the additional options on the palette.
    3. Student will save the image in PNG format as 7th-StudentFirstName-Cat1 (for their 1st hat), 7th-StudentFirstName-Cat2 (for their 2nd hat), etc.
    4. Student will go back to #3-1 and repeat for each of their 3-10 hats.
  4. Student will use Picasion to create and animated Cat With Many Hats animated GIF:
    1. Student will browse and find each of the images they saved in order.
    2. Student will change the Size option to Big - 400px wide and then create animation.
    3. Student will save this animation to their computer. The downloaded file should be renamed 7th-StudentFirstName-CatInHats
  5. Since animated gifs uploaded directly to a Google Site don't actually animate, student must upload their image to the wiki:
    • Student will log in to this wiki using their normal log in information
    • Student will go to Pages and Files (upper left) and upload their saved animated GIF.
    • When the upload is complete, student will go to Recent Changes (upper left) and find the file they uploaded. Student will click on it and it will show it on a page.
    • Student will right-click the Image and Copy Image URL. This must be done just before completing step #6.
  6. Student will add a post to their Google Site in the 3rd Quarter for Dr. Seuss' Birthday with the assignment description (so far - there will be more!) and their animated GIF. To add the animated GIF, student will use Insert/Image in your Google site but instead of uploading an image, they will use Web Address (URL) and paste the URL they copied in step #5 above.
  7. Student will watch someone they know reading "The Cat in the Hat" or will watch a rap version of "The Cat in the Hat" paying attention to how Dr. Seuss uses rhyme and rhythm.
  8. Student will edit their post on their Google Site and write a short poem in the style of Dr. Seuss to describe their cat's many hats.
  9. Student will then edit the description of the assignment to reflect the additional requirements and will add a reflection about the assignment which includes what they liked or didn't like about the assignment and why and what they learned.

How to Turn In: Student will turn in a link to their post on their Google Site on Edmodo.

Can this be completed at home?

Keyboarding Speed Tests

  1. Student will open their Average Speed Worksheet in Excel.
  2. Student will add a column to the worksheet for this series of tests that will calculate their average for the day. The easiest way to do this is to:
    • Click on the "B" for Column B to select the entire column
    • Click on Copy icon (2 sheets of paper icon in the toolbar on the upper-left)
    • Click on the "C" for Column C and then click on the Paste icon (clipboard icon in the toolbar on the upper-left)
    • Remove all scores from the speed tests (C3-C7) since you're redoing these. Do NOT remove the formula for the average in C8 - it will show as an error but leave this!
    • Change "Starting Calculated Speed" in C2 to Speed as of Today's Date (do not type "Today's Date", type in the current date; ie., 3/15)
    • If you never entered your name, do that now, too!
  3. Student will take all five speed tests. Student may take each test twice and then record the best of the two CALCULATED speeds! The time starts when you start typing and you can use the backspace key to correct mistakes on these tests and you should try to correct your mistakes!

How to Turn In:
Student will send Mrs. Sedgwick a message on Edmodo when they are done and attach their spreadsheet (by clicking on File) to the message.

Can this be completed at home?
If a student has access to the Internet and to Microsoft Excel, this can be completed at home:
  • Student will upload their current Average Speed Worksheet to their backpack on Edmodo.
  • Student will download their worksheet at home and complete the speed tests.
  • Student will upload their completed worksheet to Edmodo into their backpack and use the Attach option to turn this in to Mrs. Sedgwick.
  • Once back at school, student will download their worksheet to their computer.

If a student does not have Microsoft Excel at home or did not upload their Average Speed Worksheet to Edmodo, they can take the typing tests at home if they have access to the Internet. The student should write down their Calculated Speeds for each test and bring to class with them. Once back at school, they can complete step #2 above and add their scores and then turn in their worksheet.
